Breaking Open the Head, Alex Grey, February 24, 2007, acrylic on canvas 30 x 40 inches Before I started painting, Daniel Pinchbeck spoke about his new book, 2012, and recounted his mystical experiences with entheogens. Daniel's first book was titled Breaking Open the Head and I worked on this image as an homage to him. Here we have a skull exploding with bits of brain, eyes coming out of their sockets and the balls of light that seem to be the cause of the pressure. It is an over-the- top symbol of consciousness expansion, literally dismembering the body-ego with spheres tagged by multi-faith glyphs for God.
